“Winter is Coming”…. (I’ve never seen that show, so that’s all I’ve got.)
But this means… L’isolation des combles, or insulating the unused attic. Choices were to spend about 25-30K to fully insulate under the roof and make starter connections for plumbing/electric, basically halfway to a full renovation, or about 3-4K to just insulate for now on the floor of the attic. We choose that path and so far it’s about 5K with us doing the labor so… good decision!
Two days were spent clearing mysterious animal dropping (masks and gloves were in use) both by sweeping and vacuuming. Now we have a relatively blank slate to lie “frein-vapeur”/”pare-vapeur” moisture barrier film and then about 40cm of natural insulation (hemp and recycled cotton etc) recommended by our construction-savvy neighbor. He will build a trap door to further close off the attic. Then it’s off to saving on heating bills, albeit probably 10 years before seeing a return on investment so… let’s focus on the environmental savings instead!

Two days later, we’re about 75% done! One side fully complete, and one side awaiting completion of a trapdoor that our neighbor will construct. Here’s to a more efficient winter!
